Regardless of the work you do, if there are consistent levels or noise above 90 decibels an employer should be looking to lowering noise levels and providing ear protection equipment to staff.
Many people wrongly think that a noise of 90 decibels must be a terrific noise, but when you consider that a normal conversation between 2-3 people is carried out at around 60-70 decibels it can be seen that 90 decibels isn’t particularly loud.
If you have operated noisy machinery or have been in the vicinity of others operating noisy machinery and the noise you were exposed to was so loud that you had to shout to make yourself heard, then the likelihood is that your hearing was damaged by your employment.
At your place of work you may consider that the equipment/machine that you work on isn’t that noisy. However, you must also consider the number of machines that are within your immediate vicinity. Therefore, if there is are 10 noisy machines near where you work then the decibel levels will increase, placing your hearing at risk!
