Small to Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) provide 60% of jobs and 50% of the UK’s Gross Domestic Product (Department of Business, Innovation and Skills). TV programmes such as The Apprentice and Dragon’s Den reflect the rapid growth in start-ups and entrepreneurship within the UK in recent years.

Starting a business can be incredibly exciting and daunting. There is an entire new language to learn of accounts and regulation. For the start-up business health and safety is often an area that is neglected but can carry huge risks of litigation if not properly addressed. Fortunately help is readily at hand.

The Health and Safety Executive have a number of online resources that can help a start-up make sure that start-ups have the right policies and insurances in place. The HSE’s Starter Pack contains a number of resources including:

  • Essentials of health and safety at work
  • The health and safety law poster
  • Accident book

and other guides. You can buy the entire pack or most of the information is online and can be downloaded and printed from the PDFs for free.

Making sure you are properly insured is also essential. Business Link has a useful online tool to help you decide what insurance you need for your business.

Employers Liability insurance is compulsory for almost all businesses but the good news is that the right package should make sure that if you do find yourself at the risk of a health and safety claim you should be covered for all costs.

Contains public sector information published by the Health and Safety Executive and licensed under the Open Government Licence.
