UK hotels and B&Bs urged to avoid accidents and adverse publicity
With tourism worth around £115bn to the UK economy and forecast to increase, hotels, guest houses and B&Bs are urged to ensure guests have a safe and enjoyable time as the tourist season begins.
“Safety is paramount,” advises Vicky Slater, Personal Injury Specialist at Croftons. “If someone has an accident, not only are they unlikely to return but the accident can result in significant time and costs to the establishment and possibly adverse publicity too.”

“We advise hotels, guest houses and B&Bs to check all aspects of their premises at regular intervals,” recommends Chloe Shivraj, also a Personal Injury Specialist at Croftons. “They might seem like small things but cracked paving, poor lighting, overhanging trees or bushes, partly hidden steps and slippery floors can all be hazards.”

“Take the case of Mrs F,” explains Vicky. “Mrs F and her sister booked into a pretty B&B for a weekend break. As they were returning to the B&B after an enjoyable dinner out with friends, Mrs F slipped and broke her arm. There had been no lighting, the entrance was dark and the step very high.”
“This is an example of an accident which could have been avoided,” says Chloe. “Not only did it spoil the weekend for Mrs F and her sister but it caused many weeks of pain and distress, and resulted in a large claim against the B&B owners.”
“There are many sources of valuable information for hotels, B&Bs and guest houses” says Chloe Shivraj. “Apart from the Health & Safety Executive itself and the many tourism associations, there are practical tips on other websites such as; BandBnews and BandBowner.
Anyone involved in an accident should record the circumstances, take photographs and obtain details of witnesses (The Accident App can help do this) and make sure that it is reported to the Hotel / B&B.
