Home > Tips For Preparing Your Car for Winter…
It cannot be denied that unfortunately the bad weather, combined with the darker mornings and nights, means that the number of car accidents is likely to increase. Drivers often become quite blasé thinking that an accident will happen to someone else and not them.
There are things that we can all do to make sure that our cars are in the best condition possible for driving in winter weather.
So here are a couple of tips to help you prepare / take care in the winter weather;
- Make sure that your car is ready for winter before you set off. Check your battery, anti-freeze level, screen-wash level, heaters, brakes, wiper blades, lights (including brake and hazard lights) and tyre tread are all in good condition and in working order. Your tyre tread depth should be at least 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the breadth of the tread and around the entire circumference, you should also check for cuts or cracks.You might feel more comfortable asking a mechanic to give your car the once over to make sure it is in the best condition.
- Make sure your fuel tank is at least half full. This will make starting your vehicle easier on the cold mornings and also (hopefully) make sure that you don’t become stranded because you didn’t have enough fuel.
- If you have a mobile phone, make sure it’s charged before you go out.
- Have an emergency kit in the car with you to include;
- A snow/ice scraper
- Di-Icer Spray
- A shovel
- Jump leads
- Warning triangle
- Rope (in case you need pulling out)
- Map
- A first aid kit
- Torch, batteries, blanket, extra clothes, bottled water, some non-perishable snacks (breakfast bars, chocolate, biscuits are always a safe bet!)
- When you go out, make sure that you clear your car fully each time, taking any snow off the roof, bonnet, and making sure that all your lights are clear. NEVER set off unless you have full visibility out of the windscreen, side windows and side mirrors
