Speeding drivers cause chaos for hamlet resident

A farmer has hit out at speeding motorists after becoming fed up by the number of vehicles crashing into his home.

Fifty-seven-year-old Ted Grayson told the Daily Express that he had experienced over 40 incidents during the 14 years he had been living at his cottage in the Yorkshire hamlet of Nether Haugh, and said motorists regularly “glance off” his house as they drive around a bend in the road.

Among the most serious incidents was a jack-knifed lorry that destroyed one end of the property. Mr Grayson also remembered a motorbike accident in which the rider was propelled through the kitchen window and ending up eating breakfast with his brother.

He says that the high number of accidents has left him unable to get home insurance, forcing him to recoup damages from the driver’s insurance company on each occasion.

A neighbour has had three vehicles crash into his home since the start of the year, with Nether Haugh suffering a total of 14 similar road accidents already in 2014. Residents have also reported vehicles crashing through hedges, knocking down bus stops and lampposts and even colliding with each other.

They have requested the addition of speed cameras and a reduction of the speed limit from 40mph to 20mph, but so far Rotherham Council has rejected their suggestions, pointing out that warning signs are in place in the area and the speed limit has already been brought down from 60mph.

What to do if you are hit by a speeding motorist

While such damage to property is undoubtedly distressing, thus far the residents of Nether Haugh have avoided any serious injuries. Other people who are affected by drivers going too fast are not so lucky.

If you have been hit by a negligent driver and the accident was not your fault, you could be eligible for compensation. Croftons Solicitors can help if you were injured while driving your own vehicle, or if you were a pedestrian unfortunate enough to be caught up in the incident.
