A motorist has been found guilty of dangerous driving after police cameras caught him driving at 62 miles per hour with both hands behind his head.
Officers captured 30 seconds of footage showing 36-year-old Richard Newton adopting the inappropriately relaxed pose on a North Yorkshire road last August.
Despite claiming he had remained in control of the vehicle throughout, Mr Newton was banned from driving for 12 months, fined a total of £680 and ordered to carry out 100 hours of community service.
Case highlights the need for careful driving
Officers have since criticised the “sheer stupidity” of Mr Newton’s actions, and indeed this case should serve as a warning to motorists about one of the biggest dangers on the road – other drivers.
The vast majority are very careful whenever they are behind the wheel, but sadly road traffic accidents are most often caused by the minority. As the above case shows, there will always be those who take unnecessary risks and fail to observe the rules of the road.
What to do if you are injured in a road accident
This kind of behaviour leads to accidents, which unfortunately can result in innocent victims being injured.
If this happens to you, Croftons Solicitors specialise in providing you with the legal guidance you need to stand the best possible chance of compensation.
Your claim will rest on establishing fault with the other driver. While this will not always be as obvious a violation of the law as that exhibited by Mr Newton, our team will work hard to ascertain the facts of the case and present them to the at-fault driver’s insurer.
We will then attempt to reach a fair settlement on your behalf, and if this is not possible we will happily represent you in court.
Croftons Solicitors can also help if a family member has been tragically killed in a fatal road accident, working hard to ensure you are compensated to help you deal financially with your loss.
