The dangers of outdoor decking

As we look forward to better weather and opportunities to enjoy the outdoor life‚ we need to take care on outdoor decking, according to personal injury specialist, Simon Leighton.

Decking is a common cause of accidents says Simon. Over the past few years, many restaurants, bars, cafes and coffee shops have set up outdoor seating areas to meet the growing demand by customers to sit outside.  However, decking can be dangerous!

Decking should always be kept free of algae, mildew and spilt food or liquids, otherwise accidents can easily happen, such as happened to one of our clients who broke his wrist badly on decking.  He was leaving a restaurant in Poole on a rainy day when his accident occurred.  The decking area was one of the main exit routes from the restaurant.  Outdoor seating areas should be cordoned off if they are considered unsafe in any way suggests Simon.

Simon also urges anyone who has an accident to report it at the time and seek medical advice, as well as taking a photo if possible.
